How To Clean A BUNN Coffee Maker

Your BUNN coffee maker may appear like a regular brewer but cleaning it is not the same as you would do with a standard machine.

Whether you have a single or the 10-cup BUNN coffee maker, this guide is for you.

Clean BUNN Coffee Maker

Before we begin, make sure to unplug the unit…Just saying in case you forget.

What’s recommended is to clean your BUNN coffee brewer on a weekly basis. Regular cleaning will keep the machine clean and prevent coffee from sticking into it.

I’ll break this down into three steps:

Step 1 – Cleaning Spray Head

BUNN Coffee makers have spray heads which sprinkles water evenly on coffee grounds for better taste extraction.

This spray head can get lime deposits.

Lime deposits occur because of impurities in the water you use.



Here is how you clean the spray head:

• Once the machine is unplugged, find the spray head. It is located underneath the top part of the machine. A little above where the decanter sits when plugged


• Now, gently detach the spray head from machine. Do this by unscrewing it with your fingertips


• Use the probe which came with your purchase through the hole on which the spray head was screwed


• Move this probe up and down but with gentleness through the hole to remove any deposits


• Take out the probe and closely examine the holes to make sure there are no lime or crusty deposits left


• If you still see any deposits, use a toothpick to get rid of it.


• Finally, run cool water through the spray head and screw the spray head back on it

Step 2– Cleaning the Coffee Maker

Quite often it happens we have hard water, and it leaves calcium and magnesium deposits inside the machine.

This not only affects its performance, but your brewer lifespan is also affected by it.



Here is how to clean your BUNN coffee maker, especially if it has hard water deposits:

• Make sure that the brew funnel is in place and also set decanter in the unit. Don’t worry; I’ll explain below why we are doing this


• Next, take one-quarter of white distilled vinegar and it to the top of the coffee maker


• Once all the vinegar has passed through the funnel and into the decanter, empty the decanter and set it back in place. Now plug in the machine and leave it for two hours


• Now unplug the machine, and pour water on the top so that it runs through the funnel and into the decanter


• Take another 1 quart of cold water and pour it into the machine, so it drains into the decanter


• Empty the decanter and replace it


• Next, take a second quart of cold water and pour it into the machine again until it drains into the decanter again. Empty the decanter once again and this time set it aside


• Now unscrew the spray head and grab your brewer on the bottom front of warming plate with one hand while using the second to hold its top. Take it over a sink and empty any remaining fluid. You can see water flowing from the top and the spray head as well


• Screw the spray head back and pour 6 to 8 quarts of fresh water on the top of the unit, so it drains into the decanter (make sure to replace the decanter). Empty it again


• Finally, taste the water coming from brewing to make sure it doesn’t have vinegar, otherwise continue it rinsing with water

Step 3– Cleaning the Thermal Carafe

The only thing left here is the thermal carafe. It is pretty simple and straightforward.

You’ll need 2 tbsp. of powdered dishwasher detergent for this purpose.

Pour it inside a brew filter placed in the funnel and pour one carafe water into the machine.



Plug in the machine so hot water can move inside the brewer.

Discard the filter once complete and let the decanter sit there for 10-15 minutes with the detergent-laden water before you clean it from the inside using a soft bristle bottle brush.

This will help get rid of any coffee stains.

Once clean, rinse with cold water before using it.
